Former Headmistress, Kindergarten and Junior Sections (1936 -2024)
The highly respected and much loved former Kindergarten and Junior Section Headmistress (1966 to 2009), Mrs.Norma Fernandes passed away on Saturday,6th January,2024.
An inspirational teacher and passionate and progressive educationist,Mrs.Fernandes was completely devoted to the school and highly committed to the students under her,not just with a professional dedication to their collective education and development, but also with an innate awareness of their individual natures and temperaments too.Her recollection of former pupils’ names,their families and at times colourful history at school was legendary. Mrs.Fernandes spearheaded a series of exciting developments that left an indelible mark on the school.The evolution of the Junior Section Concert into an eagerly anticipated,all inclusive annual musical production, the restructuring of the Blood Donation Camp to make it into a real -world learning experience for students and an intrinsic part of the KGS calendar, supporting a strong professional teacher development programme, and introducing and implementing innovative and progressive teaching practices, were among the many milestones achieved under her leadership.
During her tenure,of over four decades,Mrs.Fernandes, served in a variety of teaching and administrative capacities, instigating significant changes and was an integral part of the Kindergarten and Junior Section,involved in everything that happened there, from school trips to school shows, from sporting events to academic occasions.A member of the Senior Management Team, she worked closely with the Principal of the school and with the Board of Governors, spanning a period of nearly 30 years.
Her services and contribution in the field of education were recognised by the Government of Pakistan in 2014 ,when she was awarded the Tamgha -i- Imtiaz.
Her funeral service took place on January 10th, at St.Anthony’s Church where family,friends, former colleagues and past pupils gathered to celebrate her life and reflect upon her achievements, and the lasting impact that she left behind.The funeral service was a meaningful tribute to someone who lived a life deeply rooted in both education and faith. The combination of words spoken, prayers, the eulogies and the overall atmosphere created made the service a fitting farewell to a remarkable soul.The eloquent words and prayers of Archbishop Benny Travas were inspiring and highlighted the sincerity and dedication with which Mrs. Fernandes lived her life.
Mrs. Fernandes devoted her life to the Kindergarten & Junior Section of Karachi Grammar School and her legacy will live on !
May she rest in eternal peace.
