Science Week brought this year’s theme, “From Ideas to Invention,” to life through a range of hands-on experiences across the Junior Section. For the first time, Years I and II also took part in Science Week, giving our younger children an opportunity to explore scientific ideas through practical project work.

Children in Years III–VI began developing their prototypes several weeks before Science Week during their Science and Craft & Design lessons, using a STEM approach to explore how scientific concepts can be applied to real-world situations. They also worked with Art teachers to develop the design elements of their prototypes. During Science Week, guest speakers extended their learning through sessions on the everyday applications of magnets, innovation through a STEAM approach, and the differences between STEM and STEAM.

The theme was also integrated across other subjects, allowing children to explore science from different perspectives and make connections with their wider learning. A particular highlight was the collaboration between Art and Science, bringing together scientific thinking, creativity and design.  

The week culminated in children presenting their projects to their classmates and peers from other classes. Using recycled materials where appropriate, they explained their prototypes, shared the thinking behind their designs and answered questions about how they worked. Years I and II completed their projects entirely in school, while Years III–VI developed theirs over the preceding weeks.

Science Week gave children an opportunity to go beyond learning about science and apply their knowledge, problem-solving skills and imagination to turn ideas into inventions.
