On Monday 19th and Wednesday 21st January, our Year V students visited a block printing factory, accompanied by their teachers, for an immersive cultural experience. The children learned about the intricate process of block printing , from preparing fabric to the final stages of printing, washing, and drying.
The day began with an informative introduction to block printing, where students discovered how natural dyes and traditional motifs are used. They then had the chance to create their own block-printed designs with dyes of their House colours on cotton tote bags, guided by skilled artisans.
The children also observed the entire fabric-making process, including fabric preparation, printing with wooden blocks, washing, and the transformation of dyed fabric from a vibrant green to a dark indigo. They even saw the fabrics drying on the factory roof, before being ironed and packaged.
The day concluded with the children reflecting on their experiences and proudly taking home their block printed tote bags as a reminder of their creative journey. It was a day full of learning, hands-on exploration, and appreciation for the skill and tradition of block printing. We hope this field trip has sparked an interest in the students to continue learning about traditional crafts and the importance of preserving cultural heritage.
