Linking Urdu sounds with familiar, everyday experiences helps young children understand and remember new letters and vocabulary.

To reinforce the letter ‘Daal’ (د), the EY1 children participated in ‘Dastarkhwan par Daal ki Dawat’. A dastarkhwan was spread in the classroom and the children sat together to enjoy daal chawal. Along with reinforcing the sound ‘Daal’, the activity introduced them to basic dining etiquettes and gave them an opportunity to experience an important part of our culture and traditions.

The children also took part in ‘Daal se Darzi ki Dukaan’, a role-play activity that was a particular highlight. The outside area was turned into a darzi ki dukaan, with children taking on the roles of the darzi and customers. Through their play, they used simple Urdu words related to a tailor’s shop and practised the ‘Daal’ sound in a meaningful context.

Both activities gave the children an opportunity to learn the letter ‘Daal’ through real-life experiences, conversation and play, making the learning enjoyable and memorable.
